About the Project

Located on Brighton’s retail strip, this flagship store is defined by light, volume and detail - with a double-height glazed frontage and a skylight rising to over 10 metres.

The brief was simple: maintain complete architectural clarity while delivering consistent indoor conditions.

No visible systems. No compromise to the space.
Key Challenges
Delivering performance within a highly exposed retail environment required resolving multiple constraints at once.
  • Managing extreme solar load from large glazing and skylight exposure
  • Conditioning a double-height volume without introducing visible services
  • Working within tight spatial constraints, particularly within skylight geometry
  • Maintaining stable conditions across varying occupancy and seasonal extremes
  • Eliminating drafts, noise and visual disruption
Approach
AirSmart adopted a systems-led approach, resolving airflow and plant within the building form itself. The focus was not to hide the system - but to remove it entirely from perception.
  • Integrated system components within skylight geometry and high-level structure
  • Separated system elements to suit spatial constraints and maximise performance
  • Delivered air through architectural junctions rather than visible outlets
  • Applied low-velocity airflow to eliminate drafts and noise
  • Designed for conditions exceeding typical design limits
Solution
A customised AirSmart Indoor Environment System was implemented to deliver fully integrated climate control.
  • Indoor units positioned within sloping skylight cavities
  • Remote coil configuration enabling installation within confined geometry
  • Air delivered through shadowline details at high wall level and along skylight edges
  • No visible grilles, ceiling outlets or exposed services within the retail space
  • System configured to manage high solar loads and extreme external conditions
The system operates entirely within the architecture - unseen, unheard, and without perceptible airflow.
Key Outcomes
The result is a retail environment that performs under pressure, without revealing how.
  • No visible air conditioning elements within the space
  • No perceptible drafts or air movement
  • Minimal noise, even under peak load
  • Stable indoor conditions despite high solar exposure
  • Performance maintained on 40°C+ days
  • Full integration with architectural form and detailing

Why It Matters
Retail environments rely on control without distraction.

This project demonstrates how climate control can be resolved within the architecture itself - maintaining performance under extreme conditions while remaining completely imperceptible to the occupant.
