Scent, Applied with Intent

Air Aroma Integration

About the Project

This residence was designed with a highly resolved architectural approach, where all services are concealed to preserve the clarity of the built form.

As part of the overall indoor environment, scent was introduced selectively - creating a subtle sensory layer within key areas of the home, without visible devices or disruption to the design.
Key Challenges
Delivering scent within a high-end residential environment required careful control and integration.
  • Avoiding standalone diffusers that introduce visual and acoustic impact
  • Eliminating the need for multiple devices across the home
  • Ensuring scent is present where intended, without overextending into all spaces
  • Maintaining consistency without over-saturation
  • Integrating within an already concealed services strategy
Approach
AirSmart adopted a systems-led approach, using the existing air delivery system as the medium for scent distribution.

The focus was on controlled, selective application - aligning scent with how the home is used, rather than applying it uniformly.
  • Leveraged the existing AirSmart system for integrated scent delivery
  • Removed the need for standalone devices and associated infrastructure
  • Designed for low-level, controlled scent distribution within selected zones
  • Maintained full alignment with architectural and spatial intent
  • Ensured no visual or acoustic impact within occupied areas
Solution
An integrated Air Aroma system was connected to the central AirSmart system, enabling scent to be introduced and distributed through the existing air network.
  • Air Aroma unit integrated with the AirSmart system
  • Scent delivered through existing ductwork and air distribution pathways
  • Low-velocity airflow ensuring even mixing without concentration points
  • No standalone devices, power points or visible elements within living spaces
  • Scent application limited to selected areas in line with the project brief
  • Custom scent developed to align with the character of the space
The system delivers a subtle, controlled sensory layer - present where intended, without extending beyond it.
Key Outcomes
The system delivers a refined and controlled sensory experience.
  • Consistent scent within selected areas of the home
  • No visible or audible scenting devices within occupied spaces
  • No over-saturation or unintended spread between zones
  • Seamless integration with the existing AirSmart system
  • Maintained architectural clarity with no additional services
  • Subtle ambient effect, enhancing perception without distraction

Why It Matters
Scent should not be applied uniformly - it should be considered in relation to how a space is used.

This project demonstrates how scent can be integrated into the indoor environment as a controlled layer, enhancing specific areas without impacting others.

By resolving scent within the system, rather than through standalone devices, the result is consistent, unobtrusive and aligned with the architecture.
