Off Grid Harmony

Canyonleigh, NSW

About the Project

Set within the remote landscape of Canyonleigh, this residence was designed with a clear objective - complete energy independence.

Working with Carr Architects, the project set out to deliver a high-performance home capable of operating off-grid, without compromising comfort or architectural intent.
Key Challenges
Achieving true off-grid performance required more than efficient equipment. It required a coordinated approach across all building systems.
  • Delivering full electrification across the home
  • Integrating heating, cooling, hot water and pool heating into one system
  • Removing reliance on LPG and fuel supply
  • Coordinating services in a remote location
  • Maintaining stable indoor conditions within strict energy constraints
Approach
AirSmart adopted a whole-of-home, systems-led approach - replacing isolated services with a coordinated environmental strategy.

The focus was to reduce total energy demand first, then align all systems to operate as one.
  • Reduced overall electrical load across the home
  • Developed a coordinated heating and cooling strategy aligned with the architecture
  • Selected high-efficiency systems suited to off-grid operation
  • Integrated energy management across all services
  • Worked closely with the architect and project team from early design stages
Solution
A fully integrated AirSmart system was implemented, centred around a single air-to-water energy source.
  • AirSmart Indoor Environment System (IES)
  • AirSmart ducted hydronic heating and cooling
  • In-slab heating for thermal stability
  • Domestic hot water and pool heating integration
This reduced the number of required systems from five to two, while removing the need for LPG entirely.
Key Outcomes
The result is a fully electrified, off-grid home that performs as intended.
  • Full off-grid operation aligned to site constraints
  • 100% electrification of all major building systems
  • Elimination of LPG and associated infrastructure
  • Reduced overall energy demand through system integration
  • Stable, consistent indoor conditions across all living areas

Why It Matters
This project demonstrates the impact of resolving building services as one system, rather than a collection of independent components.

By aligning building science, system design and architectural intent from the outset, the project achieves energy independence with reduced complexity and improved long-term performance.

This approach reduces reliance on multiple contractors, simplifies long-term maintenance and improves system reliability.
