High Performance Climate Control for a Large-Volume Studio

Gallerie Victoria

About the Project

Gallerie Victoria is a purpose-built interior design selection studio, bringing together designers, products and building solutions within a large open-plan environment.

AirSmart was engaged to deliver heating and cooling across the open warehouse space - ensuring consistent indoor conditions while aligning with the design-led environment.
Key Challenges
Conditioning a large-volume, open-plan space required overcoming the limitations of conventional HVAC systems.
  • Conditioning approximately 780 m² of open floor area
  • Managing thermal performance with ceiling heights between 8.5 and 9 metres
  • Reducing temperature stratification from floor to ceiling
  • Maintaining consistent conditions across varying occupancy levels
  • Integrating a system that complements a design-focused environment
Approach
AirSmart adopted a systems-led approach, engineering airflow to perform within a large-volume space while integrating with the architecture.

The focus was on reducing stratification and delivering consistent conditions across the full height of the building, without introducing visible or intrusive elements.
  • Designed airflow to minimise vertical temperature variation
  • Applied low-velocity air distribution to eliminate perceptible drafts
  • Configured the system to suit open-plan use and varying occupancy
  • Integrated air distribution as part of the architectural expression
  • Prioritised performance outcomes over conventional HVAC assumptions
Solution
A customised AirSmart Indoor Environment System was implemented to deliver stable environmental conditions across the studio.
  • Engineered exposed duct system, approximately 75% smaller than traditional ductwork
  • Finished in Colorbond black to align with the architectural palette
  • Linear air discharge along the duct length, with seams concealed to maintain a clean appearance
  • Low-velocity airflow eliminating perceptible drafts within the space
  • System designed to deliver even air distribution across the full volume
The exposed ducting becomes part of the architectural language - delivering performance without visual compromise.

The system maintains highly consistent temperatures throughout the space, with less than 1°C variation from floor to ceiling.
Key Outcomes
The system delivers measurable performance while integrating seamlessly into the built environment.
  • Less than 1°C temperature difference from floor to ceiling
  • Significant reduction in stratification compared to conventional systems
  • No perceptible drafts within occupied areas
  • Exposed ductwork integrated as part of the architectural design
  • Stable indoor conditions across the entire showroom
  • Proven performance leading to system re-specification in Gallerie Adelaide

Why It Matters
Large-volume spaces are typically difficult to condition, with conventional systems struggling to control temperature across height and often introducing drafts or oversized ductwork.

This project demonstrates how engineered airflow and compact air distribution can resolve both performance and design constraints.

By reducing duct size and integrating air delivery into the architectural expression, the system delivers consistent conditions without the visual or spatial compromises typically associated with large commercial systems.
